Good Family Dental Care Starts at Home

Early Years

Start those teeth brushing routines early, babies can benefit from a warm washrag on their gums before you see that first tooth, make it a nightly bedtime habit. A first tooth also signals the time for a first dental checkup, make an appointment to meet your Family Dentist, get into the twice-yearly checkups early for good family dental care. It will get your child use to visiting the dentist and not make it a scary experience. Your Family Dentist will also instruct you in good family dental care to practice at home.

Young children using bottles might benefit from starting to use a sippy cup by age 12 months, studies have shown children who continuously suck on a bottle all day long are more prone to cavities, set aside certain times for a sippy cup drink and remove the cup when your child is done.

Make it family dental care time, everyone brushes twice a day, share the bathroom, and set a good example. Everyone should have their toothbrush and cup for rinsing; children can brush with help as soon as those teeth start to appear, use a toothpaste made for infants and then for children, show the kids how to brush and help then floss. Studies have shown brushing for two minutes’ help reduce cavities, sing the happy birthday song as you brush, it’s two minutes long.

Meals & Snacks

Get into a brushing routine, when you wake up to start your day off with brushing your teeth and then have a good breakfast. Drink a glass of milk with your meals, the calcium in milk helps strengthen your teeth. Parents should limit their coffee intake as too much coffee can stain your teeth, the same goes for smoking, not only does tobacco stain your teeth, it can lead to gum disease and some major dental bills, don’t start and avoid the hassle of quitting.

Pack a good healthy teeth lunch, limit the sugary add-ons like a can of soda or pack of cookies, instead add a nice shiny apple and a bottle of water, not just for the kids but the parents also! Parents stay away from the snack machine at work, bring some your snacks and keep your teeth healthy! After dinner have a healthy snack while watching television or after your nightly bicycle ride, cut up some veggies or put out a bowl of fruit, start this healthy habit when your kids are little it will just be part of their day. Good family dental care is an everyday not just some days!

Parents Too

Parents make sure you are scheduling your twice-yearly dental checkups with your Family Dentist for good family dental care, don’t put it off, at your check up talk to your family dentist about any concerns you have with your teeth, a little twinge when your chew? Tell your dentist, a thorough checkup can spot a problem before it becomes even bigger! When setting the example, parents need to guide their kids away from some of the bad dental habits, like: using your teeth to open things, chewing on ice, unlimited snacking, ignoring tooth pain and remember no smoking. Good family dental care is contagious.

Older Kids

As the kids get older, have them set a timer for brushing, let them pick out their own toothbrushes and toothpaste, make sure they have all the dental care supplies available to them and in reach. Supervise young children while teeth brushing and make sure they are flossing correctly, floss each space in between the teeth, young children may need help with this until they can do it themselves.

Tweens, teens & young adults need to be reminded of the importance of good family dental care; the biggest challenge will be getting them to brush their teeth twice a day, a daily reminder will get them in the habit. Schedule their twice-yearly check to fit around their schedules and make sure they keep their appointments.

The Right Fit

Find a dentist or dental practice that specializes in family dentistry, including pediatric and adult dental care, children’s teeth and parent’s teeth may look the same, but can have different dental needs, a good family dental care practice has all your needs under one roof for your whole family and experienced staff dedicated to each age group.

With gentle reminders, good family dental care can have your family smiling for a lifetime.
